DON’T BE A MEN-PLEASER

by Apr 3, 2020April

“For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10 NKJV)

It is not only difficult but absolutely impossible for you to please everybody in the world. Only an arrant fool will set pleasing everybody as his goal in life, for it is an unrealistic or impractical goal.

When you set pleasing everybody as your goal in life you will eventually end up not pleasing anybody, but being torn apart in different directions, confused, exhausted, unhappy and unfulfilled in life.

Moreover, when you make it your aim or goal in life to seek always to please people, you will not always please God or do what is right and acceptable in God’s sight. Why?

Because God’s ways, plans, thoughts, desires, values, views, and principles are not always the same as that of everybody in the world.

Isaiah 55:

8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD.

9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

(NKJV).

Herod the tetrarch was one of the unwise people in the Bible who set it as his goal in life to please everybody, but only ended up in sorrow, confusion and regret.

First, Herod arrested, bound and imprisoned John the Baptist in order to please Herodias, his brother’s wife.

Matthew 14:

1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus

2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.”

3 For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.

4 Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” (NKJV).

Second, Herod desired to kill John the Baptist immediately he arrested him, but he would not kill John because he didn’t want to displease the people who regarded John as a prophet.

Matthew 14:

5 And although he wanted to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. (NKJV).

However, when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced so well that Herod was so pleased that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask for. Unfortunately, she was incited by her mother to ask for John the Baptist’s head on a platter.

Matthew 14:

6 But when Herod’s birthday was celebrated, the daughter of Herodias danced before them and pleased Herod.

7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.

8 So she, having been prompted by her mother, said, “Give me John the Baptist’s head here on a platter.” (NKJV).

The Scripture plainly reveals that Herod was very sorry and sad because of the young girl’s request for John the Baptist’s head on a platter.

But because Herod wanted to please the girl and the special guests who sat with him, he had John beheaded and his head presented on a platter to the girl.

Matthew 14:

9 And the king was sorry; nevertheless, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he commanded it to be given to her.

10 So he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

12 Then his disciples came and took away the body and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

 (NKJV).

Afterwards, Herod spent the rest of his life in fear, sorrow, and regret of his actions. When he heard report about Jesus Christ, he became perplexed and fearful, thinking that it was John the Baptist who had risen from the dead.

Luke 9:

7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him; and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,

8 and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.

9 Herod said, “John I have beheaded, but who is this of whom I hear such things?” So he sought to see Him. (NKJV).

This is always the end of men-pleasers!

Men-pleasers always end up in fear, sorrow, confusion and regret, and not pleasing God.

This is why the Scripture admonishes believers to serve “not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men.” (Eph. 6:6-7 NKJV).

Like Herod, when you allow the desire to please men to rule, dominate, control or drive your life, you will be unstable and indecisive in life, only to be tossed to and fro by men’s impulses, wishes, whims and caprices.

The truth is this; you are a slave of anyone you are seeking to please always and at all costs!

You cannot be a true servant of God or a disciple of Christ if your mind is set on pleasing men at all times and costs.

Paul clearly states that it is impossible to be a men-pleaser and a bond-servant of Christ at the same time.

Galatians 1:

10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. (NKJV).

Beloved, when your plans, steps or actions in life are motivated by the desire to please people, you are simply denying or robbing yourself of your joy, peace and fulfillment in life.

You cannot arrive at your desired destination in life while seeking to please everybody you meet along the way.

Seeking to please men will only turn you to a puppet in the hands of your sycophants and manipulators, and render you unfit for God’s use. It will also turn you to a mere slave or instrument in the hands of those you are seeking to please.

Therefore, seek only to please God at all times and at all costs. Don’t set it as your aim or goal in life to please people at all times and at all costs, for it is a sure road to frustration, confusion, sorrow and regret in life.

Don’t be anyone’s puppet!

Remember Herod!

Prayer: My Dear Heavenly Father, I choose not to be a men-pleaser, but rather to be a bond-servant of Christ. So, help me Holy Spirit, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
