DO ALL THINGS AS TO THE LORD

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV)

 

One of the greatest evils that have befallen the Church today is the compartmentalization of Christianity – the dichotomy between spiritual work and secular work.

 

As a result of this dichotomy, many believers today who are not ministering, serving or working in the Church or in the Christian ministries or organizations erroneously regard their jobs, businesses, careers, professions or vocations as a secular work and not as a service or ministry to the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

This is a great spiritual blunder!

 

Sadly, many ignorant and carnal servants of God today hold and propagate the erroneous view that the main reason why believers do secular jobs is simply to finance and support the spiritual work they are doing.

 

This unscriptural view undermines the devotion of the believers to the Lord Jesus in the workplace or marketplace, for it makes them see their jobs only as a source or means of income, but not as a real ministry or service to the Lord Jesus.

 

As a born-again believer, you no longer belong to yourself, for the Lord Jesus Christ has bought you with His own precious blood. You entirely belong to the Lord Jesus Christ!

 

Paul amply states this truth.

 

1 Corinthians 6:

 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (NKJV).

 

Romans 14:

 7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself.

 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.

As one who entirely belongs to the Lord Jesus, whatever you do and wherever you do it should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus and for the glory of the Lord Jesus.

 

There should be no dichotomy between your spiritual life and your secular life, or between your spiritual work and secular work. You are always expected to live and do all things for the glory of the Lord Jesus.

 

The Scripture expressly commands you to do all things to the glory of God.

 

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor. 10:31 NKJV).

 

“For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Cor. 6:20 NKJV).

 

 “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Col. 3:17 NKJV).

 

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” (Col. 3:23 NKJV).

 

As a born-again believer, whether in the church or school, or in the office or marketplace, you are supposed to be representing, working for, and serving the Lord Jesus Christ.

 

Wherever the Lord has strategically placed or planted you, it is for His Kingdom’s sake and so it is expected of you to serve “not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.” (Eph. 6:6-8 NKJV).

 

It is wrong and unscriptural to regard or esteem the clergy as the only people called to do the work of the Lord or to serve the Lord fully.

 

There is nothing like a part-time Christian!

 

If truly you are saved, you belong entirely to the Lord. Therefore, everything you do must be for the Lord Jesus.

The Scripture states that the Lord Jesus died for all, “that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” (2 Cor. 5:15 NKJV).

 

It is simply a rebellion against the authority of the Lord Jesus for any believer to do any work for himself and not for the Lord Jesus.

 

The believers are not supposed to live or work for themselves any longer, but for the Lord Jesus who purchased them with His precious blood (Rom. 14:7-9, 1 Cor. 7:23).

 

Whatever you do, in the church or outside the church, must be regarded as a spiritual work, ministry or service to the Lord Jesus. It is wrong and unscriptural to regard only the work you do in your church or for your church as a spiritual work!

 

Every work a believer does is meant to be a spiritual work or a service to the Lord Jesus.  Whatever service you render to people is a service to the Lord Jesus, for He regards what you do to others as being done to Him (Matt. 25:34-40).

 

Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.” (Matt. 25:40 NKJV).

 

Solomon states, “He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, and He will pay back what he has given.” (Prov. 19:17 NKJV).

 

“He who oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.” (Prov. 14:31 RSV).

 

When you regard your job as merely a secular job, entirely different from the spiritual work you do in your church, you will not be able to bear much fruit to the Lord Jesus in the field where He has strategically planted you for His Kingdom’s sake.

 

Until the believers begin to see, regard or esteem their workplaces as their mission fields to win souls for Christ, there will be no mighty revival and harvest of souls into God’s Kingdom from the workplace.

 

Until you begin to see your job as a spiritual work or a ministry to the Lord Jesus, you will not be a faithful and effective representative or ambassador for the Lord Jesus where He has strategically planted you for His Kingdom’s sake.

 

If there is anywhere to let your light shine before all men that they may see your good works and glorify God, it is at the workplace or marketplace where darkness reigns among the unbelievers.

 

God has undoubtedly called some believers to wholly dedicate their time and energy to the preaching of the Gospel of Christ. However, this does not in any way make them more spiritual than other believers or make their work more spiritual than that of the believers in the marketplace.

 

There are varieties of ministries or activities, but it is the same God who works all in all (1 Cor. 12:6). One ministry is not greater or more spiritual than others!

 

One of the primary purposes why God has given some believers in the Church to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers is for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry (Eph. 4:11-12).

 

Why should all the believers be equipped for the work of the ministry?

 

Simply because all believers are called to do the work of ministry wherever God has placed them!

 

Beloved, there is no dichotomy in God’s sight between your spiritual life and your secular life, or between your spiritual work and your secular work.

 

Therefore, you must always live for the Lord Jesus Christ. All your works must be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, through the guidance and help of the Holy Spirit, and to the glory of God.

It is time for you to change your wrong mindset and attitude towards your job and the people you meet in your workplace, knowing that your workplace is your mission field and your job is your ministry to the Lord Jesus.

 

When you see your work as a spiritual work and yourself as the Lord’s minister at your workplace, you will become more sensitive and receptive to the Lord while doing your job, and thus begin to bear much fruit unto the Lord in the field He has strategically planted you.

 

Beloved, let no one despise or belittle your work as a mere secular work; it is a spiritual work, service or ministry to the Lord Jesus.
